BLACK SUN
The Black Sun is an alchemical term “Sol Niger” which refers to the “blackening” or the “nigredo” stage of the alchemical process, a mortification & travail which must be accomplished before the light can illuminate & fill the vessel with the Gold of the Sun. In human terms this is depression, madness, fear & loathing, the “dark night of the Soul”. The arrow points downward where we must go into the labyrinth or into the ashpit from which the Phoenix rises. The square nail is a sign of protection & good luck in many traditions which assists in difficult situations. WOLF
The Wolf is highly social, intelligent, playful & one pointed in intent when the situation calls for it. Wolves are regarded as power animals by native peoples wherever they are found because of their hunting abilities, their intelligence & their loyalty to family & community. They are social to the point where they have mated with Coyotes & have infiltrated large urban parks such as Central Park in NY & Golden Gate in SF. Salmon is an animal that must struggle against an uphill (or rather upstream) path laden with torrents, rocks, predators and energy forces which are running in the opposite direction! As such it is an animal with great spirit. This natural fetish encourages will power, persistence and natural love because Salmon is going up stream to find his love. COATLICUE
Coatlicue has many forms in her apparitions & appearances. One of these is the Great Snake. Damballah is an African name which describes a similar apparition. Mama Wati is another & in the Pacific, she appears sometimes as a Sea Serpent. DANCING DEER
Appearing in the rock with his radio antennae antlers picking up messages from the cosmos as all animals do including humans. Indigenous people whose Art depicts dancing animals as reverent depiction or ritual reminds us that there is other information around us; we are floating in a sea of information & Nature is the great teacher, even in matters of Philosophy & Morality. Many of the natural forms of the land & geology of Northern New Mexico are visually illustrative of other human historical narratives that mirror the natural energies around & within them. This piece seems to point to something which is outside of human narratives. As Don Miguel Ruiz says, “It is not that your life has no meaning, it is that it has only meaning”. OWL

A friend living outside Santa Fe, NM walked onto her porch one evening & was surprised to find a Great Horned Owl standing in the corner looking at her. She had an intuition to call her father in Europe who she hadn’t spoken to for a long time. When she did she found him on his death bed. They talked for a long time & cleared some painful past baggage from both sides of the relationship. He lived for another week during which time the Owl remained on her porch. When he passed the Owl disappeared.

Fancied up, Owls can live & often do in relatively urban settings where they can hunt at night & make themselves invisible to the populace in daylight hours. Even the Great Horned Owl, the largest of American Owls, can & does come to town although they have a greater food source in more natural settings. Owls are seen as birds of wisdom & canny fortune tellers often portending events. A friend here in New Mexico had a Great Horned Owl come sit on her porch a few days before her father passed away in Europe. She called him & over a few days talked over their relationship before he passed. During that time the Owl stayed on her porch & only left after he was gone as well. 7″ x 3″ x 1.25″ thick. There is a story of Ravens who observed the HU MAN who had some wolves locked in a cage in his yard & when he left, pulled open the latch as they had seen HU MAN do. HEARTLINE
The Heartline is a concept which is found in many Native American cultures. In our area (New Mexico) I’ve seen this design motif on pottery, baskets & fetishes from Zuni, Navaho & Santo Domingo and it appears in other cultures here as well. The Heartline, also called the Lifeline, is a graphic depiction of the life force as breath and is the connection between animals or men with their environment. Breath brings us life energy which we can transmute into action or transcendence at the Heart. The continuity of the Heartline shows us that we are intimately connected to the medium in which we exist & in fact, we are part of a larger system which nurtures us. WANDERING STAR
The meander is a vector which is in no great hurry. There is a forward thrust of energy but it turns this way & then again. It is similar to a snake’s movements or streams & rivers which turn & switchback many times in their traverse. The star is a geometric impression of a perfectly balanced spiral which has 5 stress points in its twist. This particular star in the center of its sandstone pedestal has a slightly longer top point indicating that it is moving rather than stationary. COUNCIL OF VOICES – This concept is a combination of the process elaborated by Stephen Buhner in his book PLANT INTELLIGENCE & THE IMAGINAL REALM and SANDPLAY THERAPY, a modern therapuetic process in which people use sand & small symbolic objects to create their interior world & solve problems by using their hands (and bodies) to learn to control & harmonize symbolic stories. All Buhner’s books are wonderful & we recommend that they be required reading for all scientists & politicians as well as the general public. In the same way that rocks embody narratives which can be of help to human beings, our ideas are actually templates which tend to manifest in material reality by channeling the energetic field we are part of into a particular shape.. By observing & contemplating the “stories” or patterns in natural objects, we begin to partake of their formative energies, and they help us to empathize & incorporate their patterns into our own. The Council of Voices is an interior dialogue between different parts of oneself which are personified images that have their own voices. The advantage of using natural objects instead of manufactured images is that they are given meaning by the participant in the same way that a Rohrschalk Test functions to be a picture created by the participant.
