MICTECACIHUATL & THE AZTEC ANGEL

DESERT ANGELS
The far flung horizons & smooth undulating topography of New Mexico allow the forms of nature to be viewed on sand flats, in Arroyos & on slopes of varying gradients. The underlying geometry shows & has moved many people who experience it. Angels are considered by some as formative spirits or forces which create & protect the world. These shaped & colored pieces utilize earth pigments, essentially paint made from minerals & earths. FIERY TIBETAN GODDESS
Ekajata Tara also called Ekajati, is the Blue Tara, a ferocious Goddess who protects the Dharma from being watered down by human practitioners/monks or misdirected by adherence to ego based assumptions or narratives. The flames reflect the heat of Spiritual practice as well as the burning away of false notions & egoic attachments. A woman I spoke with awoke one night to see her standing next to her bed engulfed in flames! She had also seen her previously in a Catholic Church!!! Goddesses get around. ETERNAL FLAME (BLUE TARA)
The Eternal Flame of Truth & Ultimate Reality as Light is held in many traditions including Christianity & Buddhism, where the Blue Tara is the protectress of the Dharma in that she is the flaming truth itself. GUADALUPE’S ROSE
The Virgin of Guadalupe has been associated with Roses since they appeared on the hill where she was first seen. See the site arroyoroses.com for information on this subject. This piece is a naturally formed Rose on the larger rock which is part of a counterclockwise spiral which produces this heraldic shape when the environmental stressors elongate one of the axis arms so that the whole shape is flare or flame like. Ochosi is the hunter & tracker in IFA. He assists us in finding the most direct path to our spiritual goals. He brings the knowledge of the forest to human morality & aspirations. As a hunter he has an affinity for birds of prey, Hawks, Eagles & other raptors. His colors are Blue & Gold. This piece is 8″ x 4″ x 5″ tall. The smaller Hawk profile is Chalcopyrite, all natural coloring. The small coin to manifest abundance is an ancient Greek or Middle Eastern coin. Abundance is the recognition that the balance of Nature is always the measure of our character & an assistance in building character. DESERT ALTAR
An unusual formation becomes a perfect Altar, this Sandstone scooped out, bent & caressed by Earth & Water, is a platform for your Worship, Ministrations, Spells & Affirmations. The pieces displayed are a group of desert power figures, one a skull like apparition, reminding us of our short stay on this Earth plane & telling us to take advantage of our sojourn here, an Arrow, signifying intent & protection, a warm, beautiful Orange (Yellow on the other side!) water swirled Agate affirming manifestation in the Kingdom of the Sun, the powers of the natural world evidenced as minions, allies, angels, devas, & innumerable beings, is seen in the rough side drag charm which has a proto living form against a delicate tendrilled volcanic green triangle. The altar of course welcomes your own pieces, either added to them or in place of them at your desire. The basic Altar is 8″ x 7″ x 4″ tall. KALI
Hindu Goddess who represents the destructive force of the feminine decorated with the heads of her victims. Kali metes out Justice and also represents our human impermanence. We too shall pass. Popular Indian Art depicts the pantheon of Hindu Deities in all their technicolor glory! This piece is a postcard framed in an amazing wooden frame with carved clay or similar material affixed to the wood. Very striking and colorful! 9.25″ long x 7.5″ across. New Mexican Folk Art. This incredible wooden Cross was made by an unknown Artist whose faith moved her/him to fashion this from available materials. The wood is carved by Ant trails and the Artist with metal decoration & circular frame around the central image made from tin can material. 17″ long x 10″ wide. CHIMAYO TIN ART CROSS BY BOBBY GARCIA
Chimayo, New Mexico is the site of a Catholic Church built in 1816 by a Penitente priest . It is revered as a healing site by petitioners who come from all over the Southwest & even the World many walking for hundreds of miles on pilgrimage. 300,00 people visit each year. Like Lourdes in France it has had its share of miraculous healings & there are splints, wheelchairs & crutches left behind as attestation. Before the Church was built the Tewa Native people came here & revered it as a healing site. In 1922 the tin roof was replaced & a young workman, Bobby Garcia, asked the Priest if he could have the discarded tin. He then fashioned crosses for many years from his supply & many people have attested to the simple beauty & inherent faith which are apparent in his work. This one was made in 1940 & is signed & dated. The shrine is dedicated to Santa Nino de Atocha, one of the apparitions of the child Jesus. It is 13″ long x 7″ wide with Turquoise & iridescent metallic paint adding a touch of Native influence. Click on image to see closeup.
TAOIST STATUE
Chinese Brass copy of traditional image made by the ancient process. These sculptures are made by fashioning plaster statues which are used as casting models for the Brass which is carved on its face. Sometimes the plaster is broken and removed from the inside. In this case there is still residue left inside. These copies were made in the 70’s. Looks beautiful on a table or near a window. Great details. 10″ long x 5″ wide x 1.5-2″ thick. CHINESE WOODEN GILT BUDDHA
Setup with Feng Shui suggested accoutrements, Royal Purple felt circle, circular mirror to enhance emanations & calcite as a universal amplifier. 1 foot tall, 5″ wide. SAINT MICHAEL
ST MICHAEL – Protector of the faithful & the faith, Michael means he “who is like to God”. MIchael is an archangel and the leader of the angels. He is associated with the Sun and governs the disposition of Truth & Justice. He is called the soldier of God and is important as a protector & healer. As such he is considered the patron saint of various healing sites & especially those which have healing waters such as springs. He likes Franincense & Myrrh which are important scents in whorship of the Catholic faith. At the time of Guadalupe’s appearance in Mexico she appeared in the sky & was attacked by a dragon until St Michael came with a host of angels & protected her. The base of this piece is an apparently floating platform of 3 levels which serves as a home for this old painting of St Michael inscribed on a metal refrigerator magnet from Mexico. As happens sometimes a shrouded stranger shows up. He is joined by a Brown Cross below the figure, perhaps Jesus, another Desert wanderer. NEW MEXICAN LIGHTNING IRON CROSS
This double layered Iron cross is a beautiful example of the mixture of cultures which is peculiar to New Mexico. Having elements of traditional Christian and Native American iconography and produced in the community of Crypto Jews who are another stylistic and historic influence here, this is a striking piece! The Crypto Jews are descendants of Jewish people driven out of Spain in the 1500’s who hid their identity by assuming the external trappings of Catholics while preserving some of their own faith in both doctrine and symbology. This piece is probably from the 40’s. It has the incredible iridescent metallic paint which appears in other artifacts from that era, the Sun radiance around the Cross and the zigzag lightning motif of many Native American cultures. 13″ long, 9.5″ across. FLOURITE CROSS
Purple Flourite Cross (naturally occurring). Purple encourages spiritual aspirations and devotion and also grounds aspiration in practical service and the physical world. As such it cleanses negativity and physically benefits the bones and structural problems in the body including arthritic complaints. As the final color on the blue end of the spectrum we are moving into the ethereal realms here. In traditional metaphysics it assists the opening of the third eye. Hence purple has been associated with Kings and with El Rey, the King of this World and the next, the manifestation of spirit in matter and the path to ascension, the spiritualization of matter. JESUS BOAT
JESUS BOAT – Jesus was originally a fisherman as well as a carpenter until he became a “fisher of men”. As described in Mark he spoke to multitudes from a boat in the Sea of Galilee. This natural sandstone boat holds a metal copy of an old painting which depicts his birth and Crucifixion. It is framed and echoed by Calcite, Jasper & Sandstone rocks which have many of the same colors & rests in a bed of California beach glass which also reflect the colors of the painting. The Jasper piece has red, orange, yellow, cream & black in a diamond shape, a signature of good luck & spiritual aspiration. DESERT HEART
Desert Heart – The desert is a place of apparently harsh conditions where extremes of temperature, wind, and water inform the life of the creatures and plants which reside there. Many spiritual aspirants including Jesus spent time in the desert purifying themselves and seeking visions. The tiny inscribed forms on Caliche on this Desert Heart show the inherent (though often hidden) “language of the heart” and the wild and secret purpose we are all born for. Remember that Caliche forms into patterns orchestrated by Ormes or Superlight and, though we may not be able to translate this into our everyday language, the energetic patterns are not accidental or arbitrary. SANTERO’S WOODEN CROSS
Beautiful example of the New Mexican Santero’s art, this cross is made of antique barn wood. In the center is a piece of Selenite, a mineral of the desert here.
